Walking in My Moccasins: Who am I?
Until very recently I did not think anyone would be interested in my story. I was not persecuted; I was not in a ghetto or a camp. So when I was asked to contribute an interview to the Shoah Foundation, I was very surprised.
The Shoah Foundation was established by Steven Spielberg after making Schindler’s List and has filmed over 50,000 interviews with Holocaust survivors from many countries, in many languages. Their purpose is to archive visual history in order to promote further education about racial intolerance, hatred and violence. My immediate response was, ‘I am not a Holocaust Survivor; I spent the war years with my parents in the safety of the Soviet Union.’ Despite the great tragedies I experienced, I consider myself comparatively lucky. I don’t see my story as being dominated by grief. But it was determined that people like me could contribute to the memories of this terrible time. I was interviewed for the project.
